Itinerary (subject to change)
DAY 1:
With the scheduled flight, you will depart from Frankfurt Int. Airport to the island of Malta. Upon arrival at the airport, you will be greeted and transferred to your hotel. Dinner in the hotel.
DAY 2:
Valletta, the elegant capital of Malta, with its intricate fortifications, baroque palaces, and numerous churches, is the first stop on today’s excursion. You will explore Europe’s southernmost capital on foot, seeing sights such as the Grand Master's Palace (from the outside) and the impressive city walls. You will also visit St. John’s Co-Cathedral, where you’ll find the tombstones of the Knights of the Order and Caravaggio’s painting of the beheading of John the Baptist. From the Barracca Gardens, you’ll enjoy a stunning view of Malta’s picturesque natural harbour. After a break for lunch, you’ll continue to the "Silent City" of Mdina. Surrounded by walls, this former capital in the heart of the island has long been the seat of Malta’s aristocracy. A walk through its narrow streets, past mighty city gates, elegant palaces, and grand villas, as well as the imposing cathedral, will leave a lasting impression. From the city walls, you’ll also enjoy a breathtaking view. To conclude today’s excursion, you will visit the nearby town of Rabat, which was separated from Mdina in 870. While Rabat doesn’t have the same unified city layout as Mdina, it still offers several interesting sights, including a visit to St. Paul’s Church.
DAY 3:
Today you will explore the southern part of the island. Your first stop is Tarxien, where you’ll step back in time at Malta’s largest and best-preserved temple complex. The final temples were built at the height of the megalithic period, between 3000 and 2500 BC. The site features intricately decorated stone slabs and altars, and consists of three well-preserved, interconnected temples as well as the remains of three even older sanctuaries. From Tarxien, you’ll continue to the coast at Wied iż-Żurrieq. From this fjord-like inlet, small tourist boats (weather permitting, payable on site) set off along the rugged cliffs before entering several sea caves. The cave system comprises six chambers, the most impressive of which is the Blue Grotto. Here, the crystal-clear water shimmers a brilliant sky blue in the sunlight — a stunning effect caused by the presence of blue algae. To round off the day, you’ll visit the charming fishing village of Marsaxlokk, famous for its picturesque harbour and colourful traditional fishing boats, known as luzzus. The lively waterfront, with its small market and numerous cafés and restaurants, is perfect for a leisurely stroll and a relaxing break. For this evening, we planned a traditional Maltese dinner in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Over a good glass of wine, you can also look forward to an entertaining folklore performance.
DAY 4:
A trip to Gozo. After a ferry ride of about 20 minutes, you will reach Malta’s smaller sister island, Gozo — a haven of peace and tranquility. Despite modern developments, the island has managed to preserve its authentic charm. Your tour begins in the capital, Victoria, with its impressive Citadel, followed by visits to Xlendi and Marsalforn. You will also explore the fascinating temple complex of Ġgantija, which takes visitors back to ancient times. The natural wonders of Fungus Rock and the Inland Sea provide a perfect conclusion to your excursion. The island’s most famous landmark used to be the Azure Window — a striking 20-metre-high limestone arch reaching out into the sea. Unfortunately, this spectacular formation collapsed during a severe storm on 8 March 2017.
DAY 5:
After breakfast and check out, we drive to the airport and fly back to Frankfurt.
